#1 Food & Drink Tours in La Fortuna de San Carlos
The Story Behind North Fields
At North Fields, we’re a family-run coffee and cacao tour in La Fortuna, and we’re always happy to welcome you in! We guide you through every step of the process, from nurturing seedlings to harvesting, processing, drying, milling, roasting, packaging, and tasting. Everything we do reflects the values we’ve learned at home and our deep connection to the land.
A Family Tour Rooted in La Fortuna
Over the years, growing up surrounded by the aroma of coffee and chocolate inspired us to continue our family path and open our fields to others. This is a story that has passed through generations, and today we have the honor of sharing it with you.
Family-owned tour
North Fields began as a small family project in Naranjo, built on the idea of sharing everything we love and care for on our land. Our family comes from four generations of farmers in Costa Rica, always working with the same effort and traditions we grew up with.
Deep connection to La Fortuna
La Fortuna has always been our home. This is where we learned to understand the land, the weather, and the local wildlife that naturally support our crops. Living near the Arenal Volcano gave us a close connection to this region and the traditions that guide our work.
Where our coffee and cacao come from
Naranjo, Alajuela, is where most of our coffee harvest still comes from. Cacao is grown in the regions of Guatuso and Upala, areas known for their fertile soil and ideal growing conditions. From there, everything we grow is processed in La Fortuna. This is where we roast, grind, and package our coffee, and where we work with cacao to turn it into chocolate. It’s also where you experience the full journey from plant to cup and bar.
Long-term commitment to the community
Our Philosophy and Way of Working
Our work follows simple principles that guide us every day: caring for the land, keeping the methods that have proven themselves over time, and explaining our process in a way that feels clear and welcoming.
We follow a careful approach that protects the soil, uses resources responsibly, and supports the farm's natural balance. The wildlife that lives here is part of that balance, so we work to help these environments stay healthy and active.
We keep the methods that have worked for generations of Costa Rican farmers. These techniques help us maintain quality and stay connected to the roots of our craft without losing what makes it authentic.
We explain what we do in a simple, open way so visitors can understand the meaning behind each step. This way, our visitors leave knowing something real about coffee and cacao in Costa Rica.
What Visitors Say

What really made this experience stand out, though, was our guide Jonathan. His English was excellent, his delivery was confident, and his depth of knowledge was honestly impressive, especially considering he is only 20 years old. He answered questions effortlessly and clearly has a real passion for what he does. I have no idea what Northfield is paying him, but they should probably triple it.
I would not hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone visiting La Fortuna. If you’re lucky enough to get Jonathan as your guide, you’re in for a great experience.

Bought both chocolate and coffee.
Our guide Valerie did a great job with the explanations including the fact that most of the coffee they serve is from a plantation at different site but that this place close to La Fortuna was opened because it is closer to the city. Think of it like a tasting room in Oregon, Washington or California. You have to go to where the people are but you can still promote your product.
Well worth the price of entry and i would suggest this tour to anyone. It was easy to get around and all of the paths are paved.

Informative, impressive, and managed with great humor.
Many thanks to our guide.
🙏🎉

We even spotted a howler monkey in the distant trees and heard a few!

Our guide Cesar was outstanding and truly the reason this tour stood out. He was knowledgeable, passionate, and incredibly easy to listen to, making the entire experience feel natural and fun rather than like a typical tour. He explained the coffee and chocolate process in a way that was interesting for everyone, and his enthusiasm really brought it all to life. The tasting sessions for both chocolate and coffee were a huge highlight and absolutely delicious. We also noticed families with kids on the tour, and they were clearly having a great time too.
